NEW JERSEY—The New Jersey Devils announced Monday that they have parted ways with general manager Tom Fitzgerald. He finishes his tenure with a 40-34-3 record.
Fitzgerald led the Devils to a franchise-record 52 wins and 112 points in the 2022-23 season. Since then, the team has gone 120–106–15 and has failed to reach the postseason
Fitzgerald is credited with building the current core. This includes the long-term signings of Jack and Luke Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Timo Meier and establishing New Jersey as a top destination for free agents.
Managing Partner David Blitzer noted in today’s statement that while Fitzgerald changed the team’s trajectory, the organization felt it was time for a “new direction” to effectively compete for a Stanley Cup again. The team currently has 5 games remaining in the regular season.
The Devils will now begin a search for a general manager to construct a playoff-worthy roster.
