NEW YORK—The Yankees were on the precipice of defeat. They were facing Jordan Romano down two runs. Then, Jazz Chisholm Jr. led the inning off with a base hit. Trent Grisham then tied the game.
The Yankees would go on to walk it off, winning 11-10. They snap their five game losing streak, and improve to 9-7.
The Good:
The Yankees offense got rolling for the first time really in 2026. Both Judge and Grisham had two home run games and looked great at the plate. It was good to see the Yankees bats break out in this one, where they had struggled on the road trip.
Grisham and Rice both had big at-bats off the bench in pinch-hit situations in the fifth inning.
Aaron Boone did a fantastic job managing the bench tonight, knowing the perfect lanes to deploy the lefties for success. It gave the Yankees their best defensive alignment as well.
Jose Caballero had two extra-base hits in this game, including his first home run. Caballero also won the game with his speed. After Grisham tied the game with a two-run home run off Romano, Caballero doubled, putting the winning run on second with no outs. Caballero would use his speed to steal third and score on a wild pitch, with McMahon walking to first.
The Yankees never quit and were able to keep fighting back to win the game. It was also the Yankees first win by one run in 2026.
The Bad:
The Yankees bullpen was not good today, at all. Fernando Cruz came in to mop-up Warren in the fourth inning after a long inning, and he walked two consecutive batters to tie the game and get to Trout, who missed a grand slam by five feet. Jake Bird and Camilo Doval each gave up home runs to Trout. Bird did not look great at all today, and Doval was inconsistent.
The Yankees might need to recall someone from AAA ahead of tomorrow’s game with how used the bullpen has been thus far, and no off day till next Monday.
The Yankees defense, specifically Jose Caballero in the fourth inning, almost cost them the game. Leading off the inning, a ball that he should have made a play on bounced off his glove and put Trout on base. On the next play, Goldschmidt fumbles a potential double play ball. That cost the Yankees four runs, and Warren his outing.
What’s Next?
The Yankees and the Angels will square off again tomorrow in the Bronx. LHP Ryan Weathers (0-1, 2.81 ERA) will go for the Yankees in his fourth start, third at Yankee Stadium. He will be opposed by LHP Reid Detmers (0-1, 4.60 ERA). First pitch will be at 7:05pm on YES.
