ST. PETERSBURG, FLA — The Yankees got swept in Tampa. They lost 5-4, are in the midst of a feeble five game losing streak, with their record falling to 8-6 on the season.
This team is simply not hitting. Tropicana Field had been a house of horrors for the Yankees, and the past 72 hours lived up to that fully. It seemed that over the past three games, everything that could go wrong did go wrong.
Hitters on the Rays, like Chandler Simpson and Cedric Mullins absolutely killed the Yankees in the three game set. They are firmly in the category of “yankee killers”.
On the pitching side, Schlittler struggled a lot today. His lack of having an offspeed pitch in his toolbox was glaring today as the Rays are the best team in baseball when it comes to hitting fastballs so far this season.
Offensively, the Yankees had another bad game. They as a team are simply not hitting. There is no approach at the plate it seems right now and the team is simply pressing.
On a five game losing streak, the Yankees are having trouble getting out of their own way. It seems that everything they do is wrong right now. Like Grichuk being robbed by Rays second baseman Richie Palacios with what would have been his first hit of the 2026 season.
The Yankees have one (1) hit through the first five innings of the game, a double by Jazz Chisholm Jr. Their at-bats were not good at all today as a group. Something with this team needs to change. Whether it’s the lineup getting altered further than what it has been thus far today, or making some sort of roster move, but this team is lacking some sort of energy or intensity.
It truly felt that this game was over in the first inning with the way the Yankees offense was swinging the bats, and their overall approach at the plate.
The Yankees got two runs back in the seventh inning, and had a shot to tie the game, but Wells hit the ball right at the left fielder Simpson to strand the runner. They had a shot, as they have often had in their losses. They are 0-6 in one run games so far in 2026.
The Yankees in the series were 1-6 on shutdown innings. That’s really, really bad. Every time the Yankees got close in this game, or games this series, the Rays would tack on insurance runs.
Tomorrow, the Yankees start a four game series at Yankee Stadium against the Los Angeles Angles. Will Warren will get the start for the Yankees. They will look to snap out of this losing streak they are on that is spiraling out of control.
The Boone June Swoon came early.
