NEW YORK — Well, that was something. The Yankees lost this game 7-1 to the Angels, falling to 9-8 on the season. They have lost seven of their last nine games.
Ryan Weathers got lit up by the Angels offense in the first inning, and the bats were never able to catch up, or really get started.
It’s also the first game the Yankees lost that was not decided within a save situation, or a marging of trailing by three or more runs.
Pitching Highlight
It might be less of a highligjt today, and more of a lowlight. Weathers was not great today. He gave up back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning to Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Jorge Soler and the Angels never looked back.
It was not his offspeed pitches that were the issue. His fastball was getting rocked in this outing. For Weathers, this is noting new. In the first two innings, he gave up four hits (three homers) all on fastballs. There were six fastballs put in play, according to statcast.
The good news for the Yankees is Weathers was able to settle down and give some length. Given how much the bullpen was used last night, they needed someone to give some distance.
Hitting Highlight
The Yankees offense mustard just two hits through the first six innings against lefty Reid Detmers. The Yankees have struggled lately against lefty starters at Yankee Stadium.
The worst part about the Yankees offense tonight is the domination by Detmers kept the Yankees lefties, Ben Rice, Jazz Chisholm Jr., & Cody Bellinger on the bench. The Yankees need Rice and Bellinger in their lineup, they are big threats in their order. With the ammount of easy outs in the lineup tonight, it made the lineup much easier for Detmers to navigate, and it was noticable.
It’s ironic that the run the Yankees scored was a sac fly by Ben Rice pinch-hitting for Ryan McMahon.
Notable:
For the second game in a row, the American Leauge OPS leader Ben Rice began the game on the bench. Boone admitted pregame he originally intended to start Rice on Tuesday but has grown fond of using the lefty as a high-leverage weapon off the bench. Additionally, the skipper is committed to finding consistent plate appearances for the veteran right-hander, Paul Goldschmidt, who is lethal against lefties.
When asked if Rice could be inserted as the Yankee catcher to get him at-bats against lefties, Boone responded “I’m not ready to catch Benny yet.”
It might be me, but the Yankees might want to get Rice ready to start catching. He needs to be in the lineup every day.
What’s Next:
The Yankees and Angels will duke it out again. The Yankees will send out RHP Luis Gil (0-1, 6.75). The Angles have yet to announce a starter. The game will be at 7:05pm on Amazon Prime Video.
