SEATTLE, WA—The Yankees dropped their first game of the 2026 season tonight, losing this one to the Mariners 2-1, dropping to 3-1 on the season.
The quest for 162-0 once again ended in the fourth game of the season. Their offense was limp. They were only able to muster two hits off Mariners starter Luis Castillo. Both hits were erased on the bases. Castillo now has a 2.40 ERA in his career against the Yankees. The bombers were happy to see him leave the game tonight.
The Yankees got walked off for the first time in 2026 on an RBI single off the bat of Cal Raleigh. Paul Blackburn gave up the winning run, the only run the bullpen has given up in 2026.
Pitching Highlight
Ryan Weathers impressed in his Yankee debut. Hit pitched 4.1 innings, allowing just one run, which came off a broken bat single. Still, the single and walk to lead off the inning set up the bad luck single.
Weathers got into a groove in the third inning, and he was able to work into the fifth inning. He racked up seven strikeouts against the Mariners, who struck out more than any other team in baseball in 2025.
It was a good debut for someone who could be characterised as effectively wild. His stuff was good today against one of the better lineups in all of baseball. There is a lot of potential with Weathers going forward.
Hitting Highlight
Ben Rice set the table in the seventh inning for the Yankees to tie the game. He had a hard-hit single against the lefty reliever Jose A. Ferrer. Rice would go on to score the tying run on a sac fly off the bat of Amed Rosario, another notable at-bat in this game.
Notable:
The Yankees challenged a lot of pitches today with the ABS. The fourth inning was particularly potent, with home plate umpire Mike Eastabrook being challenged four times in the frame.
The Yankees have been aggressive with the ABS thus far and will continue to be aggressive with the system. They will continue to be. The system can literally flip the game on its head if used correctly, which the Yankees saw in San Francisco with an overturn leading to an Aaron Judge homer.
What’s Next:
Tomorrow, the Yankees and Mariners will square off once again in Seattle, with another good pitching matchup. New York will send out their ace, Max Fried, opposed by Logan Gilbert. The game will be at 9:40 pm on the YES Network.
More to Come.
