THE BRONX,NY—The hot start continues in the first home night game of 2026. The Yankees took this one 9-7 over the Marlins, improving to 7-1 on the season. It’s another series win for New York, who is the only team to be over .500 in the AL East.

It was not easy. Camilo Doval struggled once again in the eighth inning, which is becoming an issue for the Yankees quickly. “He’s throwing the ball well” Manager Aaron Boone said of Doval in his postgame media availability.

David Bednar also surrendered a run, but that was not his fault. He got a ground ball off the bat of Otto Lopez, who is a fast runner, and beat out the lackadaisical effort by Jazz Chisholm Jr. to get the out. Boone declined to comment if the two would talk about the play when asked by The Athletic.

Pitching Highlight

Ryan Weathers struggled in his outing today against the Marlins, his former team. His command was not there at all. Though most of the damage done against him was off soft contact balls in play that found grass, the walks did not help the situation. Weathers is going to need to be better as the season goes on for the sake of saving the Yankees bullpen in a big spot.

Hitting Highlight

Cody Bellinger socked his first home run of 2026 in this one. It was a two-run blast just into the short porch. It got the Yankees offense started. From here, the Yankees went on to score seven more runs, and complete the comback.

It was their first true comeback win of the season, where they overcame a large deficit (four runs) to win the game. They also kept fighting every time the Marlins got back in the game, or scored runs.

For once, the Yankees were on the right side of the sloppy, high scoring game.

Notable:

Ben Rice should not be able to challenge using the ABS system. He is 1-3 with challenges on the young season, but in back-to-back games he has used the last challenge the Yankees had in their pocket. It did not affect the outcome of the game, but there were some pitches the Yankees could have challenged later in this game if they still had the ability to.

What’s Next:

The Yankees will play an Easter Matinee, weather pending, on Sunday. The game will start at 1:35 est on the YES network. Yankees ace Max Fried will get the start—as he did last Easter—opposed by Chris Paddack.
